Gardening Tips

MARCH 2010

TIP #1 - It is that time of year and the snow is starting to melt and I am itching to get out and dig in the dirt.  Well not just yet  - the ground is still frozen so I am starting seeds in the kitchen and greenhouse.  Sucessfully starting seeds indoors requires light and heat so that they think it is May.  We hang florescent lights that are 2-inches from the top of the trays.  Jeff also uses bottom heat (we use a mat) so that the soil temperture is 68 to 70oF.  You can get these at most garden supply centers or at Johnny's Seed.  We keep a water spray bottle and soak 2 to 3 times a day.  No fertilizer until you get at least the second set of leaves.  Good luck!

TIP #2 - think about joining your local herb or garden club.  Make sure that they are a fun group who likes to take trips and eat.  You will learn alot and make wonderful new friends!

TIP#3 - Inventory supplies and tools and plan the layout of your garden.
